Bengali actor Kalyan Chatterjee passes away at 81; Career spanned over 400 films

Veteran actor Kalyan Chatterjee, aged 81, passed away on Sunday night after battling typhoid and age-related ailments. Known for his authentic portrayal of the everyday Bengali man, Chatterjee graced over 400 films, including Satyajit Ray's 'Pratidwandi' and Sujoy Ghosh's 'Kahaani'. His natural performances left a lasting impact on audiences and the film fraternity mourns a cherished member.

The 81-year-old actor Kalyan Chatterjee breathed his last late Sunday (December 7) night at MR Bangur Super Speciality Hospital in West Bengal.As reported by PTI, Kalyan had been under treatment for typhoid and age-related ailments when he passed away.

A prolific career across generations

Kalyan Chatterjee made his debut in the 1968 film 'Apanjan'. Over the decades, he featured in more than 400 films. Kalyan was seen primarily in supporting roles.He became a familiar face by portraying the everyday Bengali man which he portrayed with much authenticity. Kalyan's memorable performances include roles in Dhanyee Meye, Dui Prithibi, Sabuj Dwiper Raja, Baishe Srabon, and more. He also worked under acclaimed directors including Satyajit Ray, appearing in Pratidwandi which was released in the year 1970.

Beyond Bengali cinema

Kalyan Chatterjee’s work extended beyond Bengali cinema. He marked his presence in Hindi films too.Kalyan appeared in Sujoy Ghosh’s thriller 'Kahaani', which introduced him to a wider audience. Directors Tapan Sinha and Arabinda Mukhopadhyay often cast him in their films.In a statement issued by the West Bengal Motion Picture Artists Forum, the film community remembered Kalyan Chatterjee as “one of our most valued members” and expressed deep shock over his passing.
