Bengaluru architects’ plan wins  Teppakulam redevelopment competition

Design ideas selected for redeveloping Teppakulam tank by architects and Trichy corporation

Trichy: ‘Reimagining Teppakulam’, a national-level design contest conducted by Archtrust and Indian Institute of Architects, in association with Trichy Corporation, has selected a design idea proposed by Bengaluru-based architects to redevelop the Teppakulam tank near the Rockfort in Trichy.Top three designs submitted by architects and urban planners were selected by a jury and awarded cash prizes in Trichy on Sunday. The design competition aimed at suggesting a land use design for the tank and adjoining 30 acres of commercialised areas. Sustainable infrastructure, water management, cultural landscape, promoting heritage value along with a green space were focussed.Jury members comprising senior architects selected the idea submitted by Public Landscape Urbanism Studio, from Bengaluru, for the first prize with a cash award of ₹4 lakh.

Habitat Collective, a team from Mumbai and Bengaluru, and AVN Architecture & Urbanism, a team from Ahmedabad, secured the second and third places with prizes of ₹2 lakh and ₹1 lakh respectively. A total of 31 entries were submitted.In the first phase, Trichy corporation along with the orangisers of the competition will redevelop four banks of Teppakulam based on the top three ideas within three weeks. The redevelopment would include rainwater harvesting, a connected water network to recharge the tank, a network of pedestrian space, and green buffer. The source of funding is yet to be decided.EOM
