‘That’s Why No One Comes Forward’: Internet Fumes As Bengaluru Daycare Whistleblower Gets Arrested After Exposing Alleged Child Abuse
The second woman arrested in the Capgemini daycare abuse case allegedly turned from whistleblower to accused after a fallout with her supervisor over delayed salary payments and following the discovery of incriminating evidence by the police. Investigators say she knowingly released videos of toddlers to be circulated with the intent of “fixing" her supervisor, Manjula, who remains the prime accused in the FIR and is still absconding.
The whistleblower-turned-accused, Sujata, was allegedly sacked by Manjula, the daycare supervisor, for constantly quarrelling with her and other colleagues.
But before being dismissed, Sujata allegedly recorded a video after making a child cry alone in the washroom in a bid to implicate Manjula, police sources confirmed to CNN-News18.
According to documents accessed by CNN-News18, Sujata reportedly confessed to the police that she was the one who locked one of the toddlers inside the bathroom and threatened the child, asking, “Are you crying?" She then recorded the child crying. Police sources say the incident was staged to create evidence against Manjula.
She also reportedly confessed to recording another incident in which Vijayalakshmi, the first nanny to be arrested, had locked a young girl inside the bathroom. In addition, Sujata admitted to recording another incident in which two other nannies, Sindhu and Bindu, were washing a young boy in a western commode while he was crying.
Sujata is said to have forwarded the three videos she recorded to a man identified as Gowtham, who, in turn, circulated them. By then, the police had allegedly gathered enough evidence to book her.
The main charge against Sujata is that she released videos of toddlers for circulation to “avenge" herself against Manjula. Investigators say this was a clear violation of the children’s privacy. Police sources confirmed to CNN-News18 that investigators found incriminating CCTV footage from the daycare centre.
According to the police, the CCTV footage allegedly shows Sujata recreating a scene in which a child was crying so that she could record the child on her phone and use the footage against Manjula over her alleged mistreatment of children. Sujata also reportedly mentions this in her confession statement.
Coincidentally, Manjula was unhappy with Sujata’s performance as a nanny. This was mentioned in the statement of one of the arrested nannies during police questioning, News18 has learnt.
The police were told that Sujata did not handle children well and that Manjula had reprimanded her several times. This allegedly led to constant fights and tension between the two, one of the accused nannies reportedly told investigators.
According to a police document accessed by CNN-News18, Sujata stated that she had frequent arguments with Manjula over delayed payment of her salary. She also told the police that she felt Manjula recognised only Sindhu and Bindu as caregivers, while she was merely instructed to take care of the children.
Sujata was made the sixth accused in the FIR based on her statement to the police, in which she said that the supervisor forced her to approach Bindu whenever she needed anything, a practice she claimed annoyed her.
In another instance, Sujata and Vijayalakshmi, the other nanny who was arrested, allegedly had frequent arguments over the use of the washroom. This reportedly angered Manjula, who at one point threatened to complain against them and fire them from their jobs.
Sujata was arrested on July 3, while Vijayalakshmi was arrested on July 2.
