A strange scene at a courier office in Bengaluru triggered panic on Tuesday evening. A family tried to ship a large gunny bag with a person inside to Mangaluru. The act was meant as a protest against high bus fares during the Ugadi and Ramzan season.
Explaining what exactly happened, a police official told News18 Kannada, “the group insisted on couriering the bag, and when staff asked to inspect it, they opened it to reveal an elderly man sitting inside. Instead of apologizing, the family argued with the staff, questioned their business model, and even demanded compensation for their ‘wasted time’ after being refused service."
A Protest That Shocked Everyone
The situation turned tense when courier staff noticed the heavy bag brought by this group. When they asked questions, the group refused to explain at first. This raised suspicion.
When the bag was opened, an elderly man was found sitting inside. What was meant to be a stunt now looked serious. Staff and people nearby grew anxious. In a busy area like Vyalikaval, such scenes are not taken lightly.
The group was not just acting. They were filming everything on their phones. The aim was to create social media reels.
Two women and the elderly man were part of the act. After being refused service, they said they would try another courier office. That is when passers-by alerted the police.
Seeing a man inside a sack in public caused alarm. People feared something dangerous. The police quickly stepped in. The elderly person was visibly uncomfortable sitting inside a sack for long, he was later offered water by people around.
Police Track the Family
Bengaluru police used CCTV footage to trace the group. They were stopped before the situation could worsen.
A younger family member later admitted it was a staged act. She said her father could not travel to Mangaluru due to high ticket prices. The video was meant as satire. It was also meant to show the struggles of middle-class families.
The police did not find any real threat. But they were not pleased. The family was called for questioning.
Officials issued a strong warning. They said such acts can create panic and waste police resources. Even if meant as a joke, the impact can be serious.
Police also said legal action is still possible. If the courier agency files a complaint, the family may face charges.
The idea may have been to go viral. But it crossed a line. In a city like Bengaluru, such acts can quickly trigger fear. What started as a protest ended as a police case warning. Sometimes, the difference between satire and scare is just one step.
