The data tells a story no viral video can fully capture. The TomTom Traffic Index 2025 ranked Bengaluru the world's second most congested city.

According to a 2025 data, Bengaluru commuters took an average of 36 minutes to cover just 10 kilometres, and lost nearly 169 hours stuck in traffic over the course of the year.
A foreign visitor’s casual Instagram video defending Bengaluru against its chaotic reputation has done what years of lived experience couldn’t — sparked a city-wide argument online. Some residents agree. Many really, really don’t.
What Did He Actually Say?
Len Cook, who according to his Instagram bio sold his belongings to restart life in India, posted a video titled “Is Bangalore really chaotic?" showing what he described as a fairly busy street going about its day — calmly. “Does this look like an absolute chaotic mess right now? No," he said, adding that even with businesses, pedestrians and regular traffic around him, the environment felt “pretty calm." His caption drove the point home: “Myth busted. Even busy streets can be surprisingly calm."
Bengalureans Pushed Back — Hard
Not everyone was buying it. “Wrong, bro. Bangalore is chaotic especially in the evenings and where the IT hubs are. I’m born in Bangalore and it sucks to live there in 2026 compared to 2010," one user wrote.
It’s a sentiment many long-time residents will recognise — the city that once felt manageable has been reshaped by relentless growth.
But Some Agreed
Others sided with Cook. “Some places are even calmer at certain times of the day," one comment read. The divide reflects a city of many Bengalurus — the gridlocked Outer Ring Road and the quiet residential lane three streets away can exist simultaneously.
The Numbers Behind The Noise
One commenter put the chaos in context: “Bangalore has almost one vehicle per person. It’s been adding nearly 5,00,000 people every year for the last 20-odd years. No city in the world has grown this fast." That’s not chaos — that’s arithmetic.
By The Numbers: How Bad Has Bengaluru Traffic Actually Gotten?
The data tells a story no viral video can fully capture. The TomTom Traffic Index 2025 ranked Bengaluru the world’s second most congested city, trailing only Mexico City, with an average congestion level of 74.4% — up from the previous year.
A report in Deccan Chronicle quoted the index and stated that commuters took an average of 36 minutes to cover just 10 kilometres, and lost nearly 169 hours — close to seven full days — stuck in traffic over the course of the year.
The city’s ranking has climbed steadily: it was sixth globally in 2023, third in 2024, and second in 2025. The vehicle load explains why.
Bengaluru added 7.22 lakh new vehicles in 2024-25 alone — including 4.68 lakh two-wheelers and 1.45 lakh cars — pushing the total past 1.23 crore registered vehicles, with more than half of all cars in Karnataka registered in the city.
Cook’s calm street corner may well exist. It just has 1.23 crore vehicles for company.
