A 45-year-old mechanic was allegedly beaten to death in front of his young children by a group of men after he refused to pay an extortion demand in Bengaluru’s Wilson Garden on Sunday night.
The victim, identified as Rasheed Pasha, was attacked near Bada Makan Road in Wilson Garden at around 9 pm. Police said a trio assaulted him with a bat and bamboo sticks, leading to his death.
According to preliminary information, Pasha worked as a jeep mechanic and had recently begun constructing a shop in the area. On Sunday morning, he had installed moulding work for the shop.
The accused trio who allegedly came to collect money from him noticed the construction and demanded Rs 50,000 as “mamool" (protection money). Rasheed Pasha reportedly refused to pay, leading to a heated argument.
The confrontation began in the morning and escalated later in the evening when the group returned around 8.30pm and again demanded the money. When Pasha refused, they allegedly attacked him with a bat and bamboo sticks and fled from the spot.
The assault occurred in front of his two children, who were with him at the time. Local residents rushed the injured man to a hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries. His body has been shifted to Victoria Hospital.
Police from Wilson Garden Police Station have registered a murder case and launched a search for the accused.
Central Division DCP Akshay Machindra visited the spot and said a medico-legal case report had been received from the hospital. “The victim was working here as a mechanic. A case has been registered and efforts are underway to trace the accused. The exact reason behind the incident is being investigated," he said.
Following the incident, locals gathered at the spot and a KSRP unit has been deployed in the area as a precautionary measure.
