The Bengaluru Police arrested a man in his late 30s for allegedly attempting to kill his wife, who is eight months pregnant, following a fight at their house in Chikkabanavara.

The accused has been identified as Mohammad Peer, an autorickshaw driver residing in northwest Bengaluru. The victim, identified as Haseena, is Peer’s second wife. She is currently out of danger and undergoing treatment, police said.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the incident unfolded on Wednesday night (July 9, 2026) while Ms. Haseena was asleep. The couple had reportedly been fighting frequently for the past few months after learning about her pregnancy. According to the police, the disputes stemmed from domestic issues as well as arguments over Peer’s first marriage.

An investigator in the case told The Hindu that the couple fought over the same issues on Wednesday night (July 9, 2026). While Haseena was asleep, Peer allegedly used a veil to strangle her.

“When the wife fell unconscious, the accused believed she had died and fled from the house after taking away her mobile phone. However, four hours later, she regained consciousness and was rushed to a nearby hospital,” the officer said.

Police learned about the case after the hospital staff sent a medico-legal intimation to the station. Subsequently, the police questioned Ms. Haseena and registered a complaint against Peer, leading to the registration of an FIR under Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with attempt to murder.

Acting on inputs from informants, the Chikkabanavara Police nabbed Peer while he was allegedly planning to flee to Shivamogga. A Bengaluru court has remanded him to judicial custody.

The woman and her baby are out of danger.
