Traffic restrictions and diversions will be in place across parts of Bengaluru on tonight as the city prepares for the annual Karaga festival. Commuters are likely to face road closures and delays in central areas, and have been advised to plan travel in advance.

The historic Bengaluru Karaga festival will be held at midnight on April 1. Lakhs of devotees are expected to gather. The procession will start from Dharmaraya Swamy Temple and return to the same point after covering key roads in central and western parts of the city.

Roads to Be Closed

Several major roads will be shut during the procession. The stretch from City Market Circle to Avenue Road Circle will remain completely closed. Akkipete and OTC Road will also be closed as the Karaga passes through these areas.

The procession will move from City Market Circle via the market front towards Akkipete and then to OTC Road. Closures will be enforced in phases based on movement.

Use Alternate Routes

Traffic police have suggested alternate routes to ease congestion. Vehicles can move via SPG Road, Town Hall and Kempegowda Road. Commuters have been asked to avoid the procession route and use diversions.

Police have made elaborate security arrangements. Around 2,000 personnel have been deployed. This includes traffic police, home guards and civil defence staff.

CCTV cameras have been installed along the entire route. Night patrols have been increased. Additional security has been placed at key points.

Police Commissioner B Dayananda visited the Dharmaraya Swamy Temple and reviewed arrangements. Officials have been instructed to remain alert and ensure smooth conduct of the event.

A Long-Standing Tradition

The Bengaluru Karaga is one of the city’s oldest festivals. It is believed to have a history of over 800 years. The festival is celebrated by the Vahnikula Kshatriya, or Thigala community. It honours Goddess Draupadi and symbolises feminine divine power.

With large crowds expected, authorities have urged the public to follow traffic advisories and cooperate with officials.
