Shubman Gill has been named the captain of the Indian Test side on Saturday. Though there have been questions raised about his record in the format, the majority consensus among pundits has been in favour of Gill to lead the red-ball side. Though there are a few technical things to be sorted, the 25-year-old in his short international career with some of his innings has shown immense maturity and composure to handle pressure. Leading the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League this season, he has also shown he has good captaincy skills.

Former Indian cricketer Siddarth Kaul recalled the hard work of Gill and congratulated him. “Bhai, I’ve seen you from your U-19 days to becoming the Test captain – your journey is truly inspiring. Built on hard work, honesty, and passion for the game, this achievement also reflects your father’s vision, discipline, and sacrifices. A boy with a dream, guided by a father with a mission – today, you lead India with pride. Congratulations, Captain. The journey is just getting started,” Kaul wrote on X (Formerly known as Twitter).

Chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar said Gill’s elevation as the captain was taken after seeing his ‘progress in the last year or two’.
“You don’t pick captains for one or two tours. You want to invest in something that will help us go forward. You are hoping it’s the right call. You are seeing progress in the last year or two. It is going to be as tough as it gets. Maybe he’ll have to learn on the job. But we are very confident, and that is the reason we have picked him,” Agarkar said.

Former skipper Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from red-ball cricket last month. Weeks later, former captain Virat Kohli, too, hung his whites. Both veterans have chosen to continue playing the 50-over format. Gill will be India’s 37th Test captain. His deputy for the England tour will be Rishabh Pant.
