US President Donald Trump said that artificial intelligence is a defining technological shift of the modern era, saying it could surpass the impact of the internet and reshape industries ranging from healthcare to national security.

“This AI is incredible. It is big. Nobody’s… bigger than the internet," Trump said during an interview on The Axios Show, when asked about emerging technologies and their global impact.

Trump framed artificial intelligence as a breakthrough moment in human development, arguing that its capabilities are expanding faster than any previous wave of innovation he has witnessed.

He said one of the most significant benefits could come in the field of medicine, where AI-driven research and computation may accelerate discovery timelines dramatically.

“You’re going to have medical cures coming up 25 years early because of it," he said, pointing to the potential for faster drug development, diagnostics, and treatment design.

At the same time, Trump warned that the technology carries serious risks if it is not properly managed, describing AI as both a transformative opportunity and a potential threat.

“If improperly used it could be [dangerous]," he said, without elaborating on specific scenarios but emphasizing the need for caution and oversight.

Trump also suggested that the United States is currently ahead of global competitors in the AI race, particularly China, arguing that American companies and infrastructure are leading development at scale. He linked that advantage to broader technological and industrial capacity, including energy production and computing infrastructure needed to power AI systems.

He acknowledged, however, that the speed of AI advancement presents challenges for governments attempting to regulate it effectively.

The remarks come amid growing global debate over how artificial intelligence should be governed, with governments and private companies increasingly competing to set standards for safety, access and deployment.
