Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Samrat Choudhary will take oath as Bihar’s chief minister on Wednesday, replacing Janata Dal (United)’s Nitish Kumar, the state’s longest-serving chief minister.
Speculation remains over whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whom Choudhary thanked after being elected BJP legislature party leader on Tuesday, will attend the oath-taking ceremony. He later met the Governor Lt. Gen. (Retd) Syed Ata Hasnain to stake claim to form the government in Bihar, accompanied by NDA leaders.
“In my life, the BJP gave me several opportunities to serve. I assure the PM, HM, party’s national president, general secretary (organisation) BL Santhosh, Shivraj Singh Chouhan and party president Sanjay Saraogi that we will continue to prioritise the nation above all," he said while addressing reporters in Patna.
Several senior BJP leaders are expected to attend the ceremony. Bihar Assembly Speaker Prem Kumar is also likely to be present. Vijendra Prasad Yadav and Vijay Chaudhary are expected to take oath as deputy chief ministers, according to a report by News18 India.
Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan is already in the state as the party’s central observer overseeing the transition.
Will PM Modi Attend?
It remains unclear whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be present at Patna’s Lok Bhavan for the oath ceremony. On Tuesday, Modi was in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand to inaugurate the Delhi-Dehradun Economic Corridor.
He has also been campaigning extensively in poll-bound states, including West Bengal, Assam, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, and interacted with booth-level workers in West Bengal earlier this week.
Meanwhile, a PTI report said Modi is expected to visit Karnataka on April 15 for a one-day tour, including an official programme in Mandya district.
According to a tentative schedule, he is likely to depart from Delhi at 7:15 am and arrive at HAL Airport in Bengaluru at 10:05 am.
The Prime Minister is scheduled to travel to Mandya by helicopter, attend an inauguration at Sri Kshetra Adichunchanagiri, and return to Bengaluru by early afternoon.
