Bihar gang-rape horror: Police official suspended amid inaction allegations

A police station chief in Bihar's Begusarai district was suspended after a 30-year-old woman alleged gang rape and torture by five men. The move followed public outrage over delayed police action.

The local police station chief in Bihar’sBegusarai district has been suspended for negligence following the brutalgang-rape and torture of a 30-year-old woman.

Deputy Inspector General Shailesh Kumarordered the suspension following public outrage and allegations of policeinaction in the case. An FIR was registered on June 13, two days after the assault,but local police allegedly failed to take any immediate action.

The survivor said in her complaint that shestepped outside her home to use the toilet on the night of June 11 when fivemen approached, overpowered her, and dragged her to a secluded area. The mentied her hands and feet, assaulted her, and took turns raping her, according toher complaint.

She further alleged that the attackers useda sharp object to inflict injuries all over her body before abandoning her.

Family members rushed the woman to a localhospital, where she was treated and discharged on June 12. However, shereturned to the district hospital on June 17 after suffering from continuous,severe pain.

During an advanced medical examination andultrasound, doctors recovered a cartridge-like object, a stone, and a piece ofwood from inside her body, according to hospital and police officials.

"An FIR (First Information Report) hasbeen registered and a medical examination of the woman has been conducted by amedical board," DIG Kumar said after visiting the survivor at the districthospital. He added that police are still awaiting the medical report.

"A special investigation team has beenformed to arrest the accused," Kumar added.

The survivor's husband told reporters thathe was locked inside a room during the attack and was unable to help his wife.He said five men from their village carried out the assault.

The family has named three of the suspectsas Ram Babu Nishad, Suraj Kumar, and Nitish Kumar. The other two suspectsremain unidentified.

According to the husband, the suspects areknown local criminals with past involvements in theft and other offences. Healso claimed that several men entered their home in March in an attemptedsexual assault on his wife. When that attempt failed, the men allegedly thrashedthe family and looted the home.

Though a police case was registered for theMarch incident, the husband alleged that the suspects secured bail and targetedhis wife again because local police failed to take effective action.

Police officials have yet to address these allegations.
