Bihar Rural Development Minister Shrawan Kumar was attacked by angry villagers after he went to meet the family members of nine people who were killed in a recent accident.

Bihar Rural Development Minister Shrawan Kumar was attacked by angry villagers in the Nalanda district and chased for nearly 1 km after he had gone to meet the family members of nine people who were killed in a road accident recently.

At least nine people, including eight women, were killed on Saturday when the auto-rickshaw they were travelling in collided head-on with a speeding truck while en route to take a holy dip in the Ganga.

The minister, along with a local media, had visited the village to pay condolences to the families who lost their loved ones in the deadly road accident, but he was met with an angry crowd, who chased him for a kilometre in Jogipur Malawan village.

Viral videos emerged on social media showing Kumar fleeing the spot, clutching his dhoti and flanked by security, as an angry crowd carrying bamboo sticks and stones chased him. The minister’s bodyguards were reportedly injured in the incident.

According to reports, villagers demanded compensation for the victims’ families and were enraged when the minister said the matter would be discussed later. Some of the villagers suddenly attacked the politicians, and chased them. While Kumar and the MLA managed to escape without any injuries, some of his security personnel were wounded in the altercation.

“After nine people died in a road accident in Nalanda, I went to meet the families of the victims this morning. I had also taken officials along to ensure that everyone gets financial help on time," Kumar told Aaj Tak.

He said that when he was about to leave, some people started expressing their displeasure. “Some people wanted the matter to escalate and there should be a dispute. But I left from there peacefully."

Meanwhile, police officers arrived at the spot and launched an investigation into the incident. This incident took place days after an angry mob attacked BJP leader Mangal Pandey’s car in Patna.
