Ahilyabai Holkar ruled the Holkar dynasty in the Malwa region during the 18th century
Agra: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Tuesday described Lokmata Ahilyabai Holkar as an “enduring symbol of service, justice and good governance”, saying her ideals remain relevant nearly three centuries after her reign.
He was addressing a public gathering after unveiling her statue at Model School Ground in Agra’s Etmadpur on the occasion of her 301st birth anniversary.The event was attended by Union minister SP Singh Baghel, Maharashtra legislative council chairman Ram Shankar Rao Shinde and public representatives from UP and Maharashtra. The programme concluded with cultural performances and a vote of thanks.Calling Ahilyabai Holkar’s life “an ideal of service, sacrifice, justice, good governance and dedication to the nation”, Birla said she displayed exemplary leadership despite personal tragedies and challenging circumstances.The Lok Sabha Speaker said “Ahilyabai Holkar played a pivotal role in India’s spiritual and cultural resurgence by restoring several ancient temples and pilgrimage centres across the country ”. Her administration, he said, reflected “a rare blend of policy, justice, compassion and spirituality, making her legacy a guiding force for those in public life”.Praising Baghel, Birla said the Union minister was working in keeping with Ahilyabai Holkar’s ideals by addressing public issues and promoting public welfare.
He urged citizens to draw inspiration from her life and contribute to the vision of a developed India through active public participation.Baghel also urged parents to prioritise quality education, particularly in mathematics and English, and encouraged young people to pursue skill-based education to improve their employment prospects. He appealed to professionals from the community to support the underprivileged and said social functions should foster harmony by involving people from all communities.Shinde said becoming a queen required a throne, but becoming “Lokmata” required the trust of millions. Comparing Ahilyabai Holkar with Lord Ram, Lord Krishna and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, he said her legacy transcended regional and community boundaries.
