A 20-year-old student was discovered dead in his hostel room at the BITS Pilani campus in South Goa on Thursday, police said.

According to the police, it is the fifth such incident on the campus since December 2024.

The official said that the deceased has been identified as Rishi Nair. “He was found dead in his hostel room at around 10.45 am. The door of his room was forced open by authorities after he did not respond to calls on his mobile phone. He was lying motionless on his bed. The cause of death is being ascertained," news agency PTI quoted the official as saying.

The management of BITS Pilani, a private deemed university, is yet to issue a formal statement on the incident.

This marks the fifth such case since December 2024. Earlier, students Om Priyan Singh (December 2024), Atharv Desai (March 2025), Krishna Kasera (May 2025), and Kushagra Jain (August 2025) were found dead in their hostel rooms.

Following these tragic incidents, former Governor P.S. Sreedharan Pillai had sought a report and plan of action from the institute. In May, the campus submitted its report, detailing several steps to address the crisis — including a curriculum revamp, flexible exam schedules, and the introduction of courses on wellness and stress management. The university also pledged to strengthen its student support systems.
