Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday launched a scathing attack at the Opposition ahead of the first day of the Parliament Winter Session and said that “whoever wants to do drama can do it. He emphasised that the Parliament must focus on its plans for the country’s growth and what it intends to deliver. “India has lived democracy," he said. Now, the BJP has reacted to the prime minister’s remark saying the Opposition “should accept defeat".

Speaking to media, BJP MP Ravi Kishan took a swipe at the Opposition and said that they should build a drama school and a stage.

“If they want to do drama, they should build a drama school and a stage. They can perform drama on a road also, but this place is built with people’s money. Crores of rupees are spent here every day. Do not do drama over here. Accept your defeat. Analyse and work on it, and talk about bouncing back. If they can do nothing, they should go and take a class on the life of the Prime Minister. Their life will change, I guarantee it," he said.

Union Minister Chirag Paswan said that the Opposition washed out an entire session of the Parliament over a single issue of SIR.

“Such things affect first-time MPs, who really want to work for their constituencies and want to raise issues on the floor of the house. The Prime Minister’s concern is legitimate because we have just these 5 years to work for my people and country. But when that opportunity is taken from you, it is a matter of concern. A healthy Parliament session is everyone’s responsibility. The government is ready to discuss every issue the opposition raises. At the same time, it is the responsibility of the opposition to maintain decorum and let the House function," added Paswan.

BJP MP Biplab Kumar Deb said, “Even before the Bihar Elections, they (opposition) did not allow the house to function properly and the public wiped them out in the elections…The SIR exercise is carried out by the Election Commission of India…Why are they protesting in the Parliament?… The people of West Bengal have made up their mind to remove West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee from power…"

Opposition’s Reaction

Opposition leaders responded to the Prime Minister demanding discussions on issues like SIR, pollution. Congress Chief Mallikarjun Kharge took to X and wrote and said that the “biggest dramabaaz of them all is talking of drama,"

“On the first day of the Winter Session, instead of addressing the key issues before Parliament, Prime Minister @narendramodi ji has once again delivered his “dramabazi delivery"! The reality is that the government has been continuously trampling parliamentary decorum and the parliamentary system for the past 11 years, and the long list of such instances is well-known," he wrote on X.

“The BJP should now end this drama of distraction and engage in debate in Parliament on the real issues facing the people. The truth is that the common man is struggling with unemployment, inflation, economic inequality, and the looting of the country’s precious resources, while those in power are playing the game of dramabazi in the arrogance of authority," he added.

Congress leader Venugopal said that the sloganeering in the house was only started after the BJP leaders started chanting “Modi-Modi".

“Whenever you are making a statement, at least think about what you people are doing. The Prime Minister is talking about sloganeering. It was started by the BJP when they raised slogans of ‘Modi- Modi’. When Pt Jawaharlal Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Indira Gandhi, and so many people were Prime Ministers, did you witness any such thing during their terms? Did people chant their names when they entered the House?… We are agitating. The opposition’s role is to criticise the government’s policies. But the government is raising slogans and then advising us against sloganeering… SIR is not just an issue; the election system has collapsed in the country. The Election Commission has become a party to everything. It is no more conducting free and fair elections. We need to reinstate democracy in the country," he said.

AITC MP Abhishek Banerjee called for accountability from the government saying the Opposition is raising questions on Pahalgam but the government calls it a drama.

“What opposition is asking is a debate on SIR. Is it drama? If raising people’s voices is drama, then people will give them a reply in the next election. 40 people, including BLOs, died. They have blamed ECI. Where is accountability from the government? People stood in queues 10 years back during demonetisation. The black money flow has increased. Where is the accountability? Blasts are happening, and terrorists are entering our country. Where is accountability? 40 people have died due to unplanned SIR. Where is accountability?," said Banerjee.

“Opposition is working within the legal framework to ask questions. Just because they have won a few states doesn’t mean that they are not answerable to people. The same people will remove you from power. We are raising questions on Pahalgam, 40 people died due to SIR and BJP, and they think this is a drama? We are not against SIR, but we are against the method and way it is being executed. EC didn’t train BLOs, they didn’t remove the glitch, the voter roll is not updated, and when we want a discussion, PM is saying this is drama," he added.

Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav said, “SIR should be conducted sincerely," asking if the deaths of BLOs also a drama?"
