In an exclusive interview with India Today, senior Congress MP and jurist Dr. Abhishek Manu Singhvi discussed the defeat of the Women's Reservation Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha. Responding to the BJP's claim that the opposition blocked the legislation, Singhvi stated, "Actually, they've been exposed to be a wolf in sheep's clothing." He argued that the government introduced the bill without proper consultation, bypassing all-party meetings and parliamentary committees. Singhvi pointed out that the BJP failed to operationalise the 2023 constitutional amendment for three years, only to bring a new bill for political messaging. He asserted that the legislation was "brought only to fail" and called it a charade. Singhvi emphasised that the Congress party and the India Alliance are ready to implement women's reservation immediately based on the 2011 census for the current 543 Lok Sabha seats. He challenged the government to initiate the process, declaring that the opposition is fully prepared to reserve one-third of the seats for women before the 2029 elections.
