Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Saurabh Joshi was elected as the new Mayor of Chandigarh on Thursday morning as the results of the Mayoral election was announced today.

Joshi received 18 votes against 11 for Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Yogesh Dhingra. Congress candidate Gurpreet Gabbi won seven votes.

Polling for the posts of Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor in the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation commenced at 11 am. The BJP nominated Joshi for the mayoral race, while the Congress went with Gurpreet Singh Gabbi and the AAP fielded Yogesh Dhingra.

Despite the Congress-AAP challenge, the result underscored the BJP’s sustained hold over the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation. The BJP holds 18 councillors in the Municipal Corporation, Congress 6, and AAP 11, and the Member of Parliament has an additional vote. This created a tie of 18 votes each between the BJP and the Congress–AAP alliance.

However, the election outcome was shaped by the collapse of the Congress-AAP alliance, as the Congress went solo this time and put up its own candidate. As a result of this tie, the election was conducted through a show of hands, where Joshi received 18 votes in his favour. Dhingra got 11 votes and Gabbi received seven.

“Heartiest congratulations to Shri Saurabh Joshi ji on being elected Mayor of Chandigarh from BJP. Wishing him a successful tenure in serving the people and taking Chandigarh to new heights of development and good governance," said BJP leader and Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu.
