Ahead of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s slated visit to Chandigarh for deliberations with Haryana party leaders surrounding organisational issues, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday took a dig at the Congress for what it termed as the party’s failure to choose even its Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly.

The Congress in Haryana is yet to choose its Legislature Party leader (CLP), who would serve as the Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, even though it has been around eight months since the new government was formed in the State. The BJP regained power and the Congress became the principal Opposition party after facing an electoral drubbing in the State Assembly election held in October 2024. Former Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda was the Leader of Opposition in the previous House.

Hitting out at the Congress, Haryana’s Energy, Transport and Labour Minister Anil Vij said: “Congress expresses its views on all national issues and speaks at length about the country’s major problems, but they have not been able to decide the Leader of Opposition in just one unit of their party in a single state — which is very disappointing.”

He was speaking with media persons here, reacting to Mr. Gandhi’s visit to Chandigarh and his meeting with Haryana Congress leaders.

“It has been over eight months and yet they have not been able to decide on their Leader of Opposition, which is extremely disappointing,” he said. Mr. Vij has been targeting the Congress, saying “it has lost its ability to make decisions, and failing to choose the leader of the opposition was a clear example.”

Mr. Gandhi is set to visit Chandigarh on June 4.
