Kolkata: Bharatiya Janata Majdoor Cell, a trade union affiliated to BJP, submitted a memorandum with Taratala police station on Saturday, demanding the arrest of former mayor Firhad Hakim and two former councillors — Anwar Khan of ward 80 and Shams Iqbal of ward 134 — in connection with illegal constructions in the Kolkata Port area.
They urged the police to register an FIR against the trio. The memorandum of the cell came three days after an under-construction warehouse caved in at Taratala’s Transport Depot Road, killing 16 workers and leaving 19 injured.MB Mahesh, president of the cell in south Kolkata, said: “We have informed the police about the role of Hakim and two other councillors behind illegal constructions in the Kolkata Port area. The death of innocent citizens is a matter of grave concern. We have requested the cops to register an FIR and arrest the three who are main culprits. The CM has also stated that Hakim’s signature was found.”Reacting to this, Trinamool spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said: “If Hakim is arrested by 5pm, we will understand what the CM has shown is correct. Otherwise, it will be presumed that his signature is being used to mount pressure.”
