Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday launched an attack on West Bengal’s Trinamool Congress government, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing the party of failing to secure the state’s border, and saying that the BJP would secure the border in 45 days if it came to power.
Speaking in Bengal’s Barrackpore, Shah said forming a BJP government in Bengal was “not necessary only for the state, it is crucial for the security of the entire country," asserting that the manner in which infiltration was taking place threatened not just the state but national security as a whole.
Asking whether such infiltration should be stopped, he referred to Banerjee’s claim that the Central government was responsible, but countered that her administration was not providing the land required for fencing along the border.
Because of this, he said, complete barbed-wire fencing had not been possible.
He alleged that infiltrators were entering through the border and that the state police administration, under government influence, prepared fake documents for them.
Referring to court proceedings, Shah said the High Court had spoken in favour of the Border Security Force on the fencing issue, yet land was still not being handed over.
“Infiltrators are her vote bank," he charged, reiterating that once the BJP came to power by the end of April, land acquisition would be ensured and fencing completed within 45 days to guarantee security.
Turning next to community-related issues, Shah accused the state government of trying to intimidate the Matua community and said BJP leader Shantanu Thakur was standing with them.
Addressing the community directly, he declared that there was “no need to be afraid," adding that the Central government was also with them.
He said that regardless of how much Banerjee opposed the Special Intensive Revision, it would be implemented strictly in accordance with the law and established rules.
Shah then escalated his political attack, saying that “not just change, the government of this state must be uprooted completely, roots and all."
He added that the BJP would build a ‘Sonar Bangla’ envisioned by Rabindranath Tagore and Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay.
Predicting electoral success, Shah said the Bharatiya Janata Party would secure more than 50 per cent vote share and a huge majority in the upcoming polls.
He again underlined that infiltration along Bengal’s borders posed a threat to the entire country and asserted that a government which, in his words, provided shelter to infiltrators was certain to be voted out.
Continuing his attack on the Trinamool Congress, Shah accused it of opposing discussions on “Vande Mataram" in Parliament for vote-bank politics and appeasement, calling such objections akin to opposing Bengal’s identity.
Reiterating his confidence about the election outcome, he concluded that the present dispensation would be removed and replaced with a BJP administration focused, he said, on security and rebuilding the state.
The Union Home Minister also paid tribute to workers who lost their lives in a fire at the Anandapur warehouse near Kolkata, before alleging that the blaze “was not an accident" but the result of corruption under the Trinamool Congress-led government.
He urged supporters to raise both hands and chant slogans to signal victory, asking whether they wanted to form a BJP government in Bengal and “uproot" the ruling party.
