Powerful explosions erupted at Tehran’s Revolution Square on Sunday, caught live on Iranian state television, as crowds of mourners gathered at the heart of the capital refused to flee and instead waved their national flags with greater force in a show of open defiance against US and Israeli strikes.
The footage, broadcast without interruption by Iranian state TV and shared widely on social media by RT (Russia Today), showed blasts lighting up the sky over Enghelab Square, one of the most politically symbolic locations in Iran, even as crowds below held their ground and chanted anti-war slogans. Not a single person in the shot turned to run.
The explosions came on the same day the Israeli military confirmed it was actively targeting central Tehran, with blasts reported near the country’s police headquarters and the Iranian state broadcasting complex, according to The Associated Press. The Israeli Defence Forces said dozens of fighter jets had launched the operation using over 170 munitions targeting command centres and missile production facilities, the IDF said in a statement.
The scenes at Revolution Square came just hours after Iran’s Revolutionary Guard vowed to launch what it called its most intense offensive operation in the Islamic Republic’s history, targeting US military bases and Israeli positions, as reported by France 24 and Al Jazeera.
Iran’s parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, in a televised address, warned that the country would deliver blows until the enemy begged for an end to hostilities, The Associated Press.
