Tamil Nadu may soon witness a blockbuster bypoll in Trichy East, with sources telling India Today that DMK chief MK Stalin could contest from the Assembly seat vacated by Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay. However, the former CM has neither accepted nor denied such reports so far.

Political circles in Tamil Nadu have been abuzz with speculation over Stalin's possible candidature ever since senior DMK leader KN Nehru told a gathering in Pudukottai that the former Chief Minister would soon re-enter the Assembly. Stalin lost Kolathur – his traditional bastion – by a margin of 8,000 votes in the recent elections.

Nehru's remarks came in response to Chief Minister Vijay's jibe at Stalin's absence from the Assembly. Replying to the taunt, Stalin said he remained present in the hearts of the people despite not being in the legislature.

"I am in people's hearts. I may not be in the Assembly, but I am there wherever people look for me," he said.

Earlier, former DMK minister Anbil Mahesh was also seen as a potential contender for the bypoll.

A political war of words began after Vijay, during an Assembly speech, narrated a story centred around the question, "Where is your father?" The remark was widely interpreted as a swipe at Udhayanidhi Stalin and his father MK Stalin's absence from the House.

Vijay's comment also drew criticism from some of his alliance partners. VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan said the remark did not befit the dignity of the Chief Minister's office and that Vijay should have avoided making a personal reference. He also urged the Chief Minister to uphold the decorum of the Assembly.

The exchange then turned more personal. Udhayanidhi Stalin responded on X with a post about a wife searching for her husband at the Chengalpattu court. The post was widely interpreted as an indirect reference to reports regarding Vijay's wife Sangeetha's divorce plea. The response, too, drew criticism from political observers, who said leaders on both sides were dragging personal matters into political discourse.

The bypoll is expected to be watched closely as the first major electoral test since the Assembly elections. For the DMK, it could provide an opportunity to bring Stalin back into the legislature and strengthen the party's challenge to the Vijay government. For the TVK, the upcoming bypolls for six seats provide an opportunity to increase its strength in the 234-member Assembly.
