A case initially believed to be a tragic railway accident has been solved nearly two months later, with Faridabad police arresting a woman and her boyfriend for allegedly murdering her husband and staging the crime to appear accidental.

Police arrested Anjani Devi (29) and her lover Mohammad Riyazul (30) on Sunday for the murder of Suman Jha (36), whose mutilated body was found on railway tracks at Mewla Maharajpur area in the city on December 1. The body was severely damaged, and investigators initially suspected an accidental death. With no claimant coming forward, the unidentified body was cremated three days later, according to a report in Hindustan Times.

According to police, the murder took place on the night of November 30. Investigators said the accused made Jha consume alcohol, took him near the railway tracks, and killed him by crushing his head with stones. The body was then placed on the tracks, where it was run over by multiple trains to mislead investigators.

The case was reopened weeks later after Jha’s brother, Sunny, filed a missing person complaint at Surajkund police station on January 18. During the investigation, Sunny identified Jha from photographs of unidentified bodies and belongings based on his clothes.

It is learnt that Jha, a resident of Godda district in Jharkhand, had been married to Anjani Devi for 15 years and the couple had two children. They had been living in a rented house in Mewla Maharajpur near Sector 46, Faridabad. Riyazul, who worked with Anjani in a private firm, lived in the same area and was allegedly in a relationship with her for the past three years.

Investigators said Jha had discovered the relationship days before his death, which became the motive for the murder. Call detail records showed Anjani remained in constant contact with Riyazul before and after the crime, and she never reported her husband missing, which raised suspicion.

Both accused were produced before a local court and remanded to four days of police custody. An FIR under Section 103(1) (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita was registered. Further investigation was underway.
