: A transit waste collection point opposite CGO complex in Salt Lake, where heaps of garbage used to be seen lying throughout the day earlier, has now been removed, with the place cleaned and flower pots placed so that no garbage can be thrown at the place.Locals said that after the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) board of councillors was dissolved, the civic authorities conducted the state govt’s ‘Swacch’ cleanliness drive initiative across Bidhannagar as the initiative was taken to clear the transit waste collection point opposite CGO complex. The garbage vat has been cleaned and flower pots have been placed at the spot to prevent any further dumping or throwing of waste.“The place used to be in a mess with heaps of garbage every day. The accumulated garbage could not be disposed of properly as the entire area used to stink throughout the day,” said an office-goer who moves along the place every day.Residents say Salt Lake is looking much cleaner after the BMC civic board was dissolved about a month back on June 7. Earthmovers are being used to collect the daily generated waste from the waste collection points, and the civic authorities are conducting cleaning work of the roadsides regularly.
“Heaps of garbage, including plastic and abandoned household items, used to be dumped along the roadside and on the dividers across the township. The places are visibly looking much cleaner now,” said Manas Mukherjee, a resident of DL block. The BMC is stressing regular cleaning of the gully pits and drainage lines to minimise waterlogging during the ongoing monsoon. The authorities have introduced a toll-free grievance cell no.
- 6292234126 - for residents to call round the clock for any civic assistance.“Work is going on regularly to clean the gully pits and keep the drainage lines clean so that stormwater could get flushed out quickly. Also, we are keeping an eye on electric feeder boxes to prevent electrocution during monsoon, which has happened in the city on earlier occasions. Civic teams are being mobilised from early morning, as senior officials, as well as from the borough level, are moving from 6 am to 2 pm to ensure that gully pits and drainage lines are properly cleaned,” said a civic official.
