BMC plants 8k saplings in Miyawaki method

Plantation drive near Odisha University of Agriculture & Technology

Bhubaneswar: Taking advantage of monsoon, Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Monday took up a massive plantation in the Miyawaki method on two acres belonging to OUAT.Housing and urban development minister Krushna Chandra Mohapatra attended the drive that saw the planting of around 8,000 saplings.BMC said Monday’s plantation drive was taken up in Baramunda with the city’s forest division and Chandaka forest range extending their support to provide saplings and guiding as to how to plant trees. If trees are planted using the ordinary method, only 1,600 trees can be planted on a hectare.

But if trees are planted using the Miyawaki method, 5 times that count, or 8,000 to 10,000 trees, can be planted on each hectare, BMC officials said.It was the second phase of the Miyawaki method plantation. Earlier, Miyawaki method had been carried out during plantation in different places, which have now grown into dense forests. “Within just two years, these trees have grown over 10 feet tall, forming a thick green cover,” said a BMC officer.

Miyawaki plantation has been adopted in City Park, Ghatikia, nearby areas of Patia, Nayapalli Haat, Kalinga Nagar Sector-6, near Kalinga Studio, and 16 other locations. More than 80,000 trees have been planted so far using the method, creating independent forests. Citizens, students, and volunteers from different regions have been encouraged to participate in this initiative to strengthen environmental pride.
