Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National Spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari on Sunday claimed that a large cache of explosives was allegedly recovered in South 24 Parganas district. This comes just days ahead of the second phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections 2026.
The seizure, reportedly from the residence of a TMC worker in Bhangar, has intensified the political slugfest and raised fresh concerns over poll-related violence.
“100 live bombs recovered from TMC worker, Rafikul Islam’s house in Bhangar! ‘Bhoy being caught’ Bharosa will defeat TMC’s ‘Bhoy’!" Bhandari wrote in a post on X, targeting the ruling party.
EC Warns Police To Heighten Vigilance
Amid the controversy, the Election Commission officials have issued strict directions to law enforcement authorities. According to sources, “Stern message has been given to CP Kolkata, all DCPs, all SPs and all officers upto OC & IC that if any such explosive is found or any such threatening tactics are used by any person in their jurisdiction, concerned OC/ IC will have to face unprecedented consequences and they shall not be spared. Therefore, all such threatening material should be seized within next 24 hrs without fail."
Meanwhile, Kolkata CP Ajay Nand has said that officials will further intensify vigilance to ensure “violence-free" elections. “We will be intensifying our CBM measures in the coming 24 hours. There were certain things spotted in the first phase and a lot of arrangements have been made for a violence-free election. Police picketing will be there in high-rise buildings too, for small narrow areas near the booth, extra CCTV camera arrangements have been made," the CP added.
The developments come as authorities step up preparations for the April 29 polling. A high-level review meeting was held in Kolkata earlier in the day with senior police officials, election observers and central forces to ensure coordination, assess vulnerabilities and finalise deployment strategies. With over 93 per cent turnout recorded in the first phase, officials are under pressure to ensure a peaceful and secure voting process in the next round.
