Pune Metro Line 2 Extension
- The extensions include Vanaz to Chandani Chowk (Corridor 2A) and Ramwadi to Wagholi/Vitthalwadi (Corridor 2B), building upon the current Vanaz-Ramwadi corridor from Phase-1.
- The elevated corridors will extend across 12.75 km, incorporating 13 stations and linking rapidly growing suburban areas including Chandani Chowk, Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharadi, and Wagholi. The construction is expected to conclude in four years.
- The project carries a total cost estimation of Rs.3626.24 crore, with equal funding distribution amongst the Government of India, Government of Maharashtra, and external bilateral/multilateral agencies.
- This Pune Metro extension plan naturally progresses from the existing Corridor-2 and corresponds with the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP).
- The plan envisions establishing a continuous metro connection from Chandani Chowk to Wagholi, enhancing the East-West public transport infrastructure in Pune.
- The planned Metro extensions will connect major technology centres, business districts, academic facilities, and housing areas, which will boost public transportation usage across the rail network.
- These new routes will converge at the District Court Interchange Station with Line-1 (Nigdi–Katraj) and Line-3 (Hinjewadi–District Court), enabling efficient multimodal urban connectivity.
- As part of comprehensive transport planning, long-distance bus services from Mumbai and Bengaluru will link at Chandani Chowk, whilst those from Ahilya Nagar and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar will interface at Wagholi, providing convenient access to Pune's Metro network.
- These expansions will reduce traffic on major roads like Paud Road and Nagar Road, whilst providing reliable, swift, and environmentally sustainable transport alternatives.
- The anticipated daily ridership increase for Line 2, following the completion of these corridors, is projected to reach 0.96 lakh in 2027, rising to 2.01 lakh in 2037, further increasing to 2.87 lakh in 2047, and ultimately reaching 3.49 lakh in 2057.
- Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) will oversee the project implementation, managing all civil works, electro-mechanical systems, and associated activities. Initial preparatory work, including topographical assessments and detailed design consultation, is already underway.
- This expansion plan aims to strengthen Pune's economic capabilities, improve its urban transportation network, and foster sustainable growth throughout the metropolitan area.
