Kendrapada: A local court in Jajpur on Monday sentenced a 29-year-old man to life imprisonment for murdering his girlfriend, a 21-year-old college student in Bhubaneswar, five years back.Additional district and sessions judge Bisweswar Biswaprakash Ray convicted the accused, Rakesh Swain of murder and trying to destroy evidence.The court also sentenced Amaresh Rout (29), a friend of the prime accused, to five years of imprisonment for helping Swain to transport and dump the body to destroy evidence.According to the prosecution, the victim, Jharafula Nayak, a student of RD Women’s College in Bhubaneswar, was murdered on Jan 26, 2021.
Her body was later recovered at Mulapal Chowk under Kuakhia police station in Jajpur district.As per the prosecution’s case, the murder was the result of a dispute over Rs 30,000, which Swain had borrowed from Nayak to buy a motorcycle. Their relationship turned bitter after she sought the money back.On the day of the incident, the couple checked into a hotel in Bhubaneswar, where Swain allegedly forced her to consume alcohol and strangled her to death. Later, with the help of Rout, Swain carried the body on a motorcycle and dumped it nearly 100 km away in Kuakhia, Jajpur district.Special public prosecutor Sitanshu Mohanty said the court delivered the verdict after examining 22 witnesses and considering CCTV footage and other documentary evidence.
