In a remarkable act of compassion, the family of a farmer in Gujarat’s Kheda, who was declared brain-dead, chose to donate his organs, saving the lives of seven patients.
The donor, 39-year-old Manubhai Parmar, was declared brain-dead at a hospital in Ahmedabad following a severe head injury sustained in a road accident on April 12. Despite continuous medical efforts, doctors were unable to revive him.
After he was declared brain-dead, hospital authorities counselled his wife, Arkhaben, and other family members about the possibility of organ donation. Following careful consideration, the family consented to donate his heart, liver, kidneys, eyes, and skin, benefiting seven patients in urgent need of transplants.
The retrieved organs were allocated to different medical facilities. The liver and kidneys were transplanted into patients at the Kidney Hospital within the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital campus. The heart was sent to CIMS Hospital in Ahmedabad for transplantation. His eyes were donated to M&J Eye Hospital, while the skin was preserved at the Civil Hospital’s skin bank.
Dr Rakesh Joshi, Superintendent of Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, lauded the family’s decision, stating that although Manubhai was a farmer by profession, his family’s humane gesture in his final moments gave new life to seven individuals.
He added that awareness about organ donation among families of brain-dead patients has been steadily increasing. So far, Ahmedabad Civil Hospital has facilitated organ donations from 234 brain-dead patients, resulting in the retrieval of 774 organs, including 431 kidneys, 208 livers, 74 hearts, and 34 lungs.
The family’s decision stands as a powerful reminder of how organ donation can turn personal tragedy into hope for others.
