India’s leadership of the BRICS grouping will help in enhancing priorities of the Global South, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday (June 23, 2026). Meeting the National Security Advisers of the BRICS member-countries in New Delhi, Mr. Modi said the grouping can play a vital role in dealing with terrorism, cyber security, and other common challenges.

“In a challenging global landscape, BRICS has a vital role in deepening security cooperation and addressing shared challenges, from terrorism and cyber security to emerging technologies. India’s chairmanship will seek to advance practical cooperation, support the priorities of the Global South, and contribute to a safer and more secure and inclusive world,” said Mr. Modi while meeting the NSAs of the BRICS member-states.

The member-states held a two-day meeting here from June 22 where the delegates discussed energy and food security, supply chain disruption, emerging technologies that are used by terrorist networks, cyber security, and climate-induced instability.

The delegations expressed their “full support” to India’s BRICS chairship in 2026 under the theme: “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability”, said the MEA in a statement. On the sidelines of the meeting, Mr. Doval met with his counterpart, the Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, Sergei Shoigu, on Tuesday and reviewed bilateral projects that are currently under way.

Iran’s complaint

The meeting also witnessed some tense moments when the delegates of the UAE and Iran clashed over the war in the Gulf with Ghadir Nezamipour, leader of the Iranian delegation, saying: “Attacks were launched from bases located on the territory of the United Arab Emirates.”

“We hope that the United Arab Emirates will respect the principles of good neighbourliness and choose the path of peace, stability, and regional cooperation,” said Mr. Nezamipour.
