Iran on Sunday gained diplomatic support from BRICS nations at their summit in Rio de Janeiro, with the bloc strongly condemning recent air strikes on Iranian military, nuclear and other facilities.

In their joint declaration, BRICS leaders stated, “We condemn the military strikes against the Islamic Republic of Iran since 13 June 2025, which constitute a violation of international law."

While the statement did not mention the United States or Israel directly, it was widely understood to be a reference to their actions.

The 11-member BRICS grouping, comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa and newly added members such as Iran, expressed concern over actions they said undermined global peace and international norms.

Voices ‘Serious Concern’ On Trump’s Tariff

The summit also addressed economic concerns, with BRICS leaders criticising US President Donald Trump’s tariff policies. They said such unilateral decisions were damaging the global economy and disrupting trade.

“We voice serious concerns about the rise of unilateral tariff and non-tariff measures which distort trade and are inconsistent with WTO rules," the declaration said, referring to the World Trade Organization.

The BRICS bloc, which accounts for nearly half of the world’s population and about 40 percent of global economic output, has often been divided on various issues. However, it found common ground in pushing back against what it sees as unpredictable and harmful trade policies from the US.

The declaration described the US tariffs as “illegal and arbitrary," warning that such measures could “further reduce global trade, disrupt global supply chains, and introduce uncertainty into international economic and trade activities."

Earlier in April, President Trump threatened a fresh round of import duties targeting both allies and competitors, although he later backed off following a negative reaction from the markets.

Still, he has warned that unless trade “deals" are struck by 1 August, unilateral tariffs will be imposed once again.
