'Love Jihad' Crusader Bittu Bajrangi Fell Victim to a Fake Marriage Racket

For years, Bittu Bajrangi built his public image by leading campaigns against alleged “love jihad" and inter-faith relationships in Haryana. But in an unexpected twist, the Gau Raksha Bajrang Force chief now claims he became the victim of a fake marriage racket. Police say a gang allegedly cheated him of Rs 41,000 after promising to arrange a bride, leading to the arrest of five accused. Here’s how the alleged fraud unfolded.

Five people have been arrested for allegedly cheating Raj Kumar alias Bittu Bajrangi, founder of the Gau Raksha Bajrang Force, by promising to arrange his marriage and taking Rs 41,000 from him.

The Crime Branch of Faridabad Police arrested Danish Chaman (35), his wife Mahavish Danish (27), Sachin (27) and Sanjeev (52), all residents of Aligarh, along with Pradeep (34) from Bulandshahr. All five were produced before a court on Saturday and remanded to police custody for further questioning.

What we know about the case?

According to the complaint lodged by Bittu Bajrangi at Sarai Khwaja police station, he was introduced to the alleged gang through an acquaintance, Bantu alias Avinash.

Bajrangi, a resident of Sanjay Enclave in Faridabad, had asked Bantu to help him find a bride. Bantu introduced him to a woman identified as Rani alias Lakshmi, who claimed to arrange marriages.

Bajrangi told police that he travelled to Aligarh two or three times to meet prospective brides but rejected the matches. Later, he received a photograph of a woman identified as “Pooja" and agreed to the proposal.

According to the complaint, on September 5 last year, Rani, Mahavish Danish, allegedly posing as Pooja, and others claiming to be her relatives visited Bajrangi’s house in Faridabad and collected Rs 11,000 as engagement money.

The following day, they allegedly took another Rs 30,000 for wedding expenses and fixed September 7, 2025, as the wedding date at a temple in Aligarh. However, when Bajrangi reached the temple on the scheduled date, no one from the bride’s side turned up.

What police said?

Investigators said the entire family presented before Bajrangi was fake. According to police, Mahavish Danish posed as the prospective bride “Pooja", Pradeep acted as her uncle, Sanjeev posed as another relative, Sachin worked as the middleman and Danish Chaman pretended to be the bride’s brother. Police said the accused had used similar methods in previous cases.

Mahavish Danish has earlier served jail time in two cheating cases, while Pradeep has previously been jailed in Aligarh and Dasna in Noida in similar marriage fraud cases.

Investigators suspect the gang has been operating across Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and possibly other states for several years.

Faridabad Police spokesperson Yashpal said police teams were conducting raids to arrest Rani alias Lakshmi, who is believed to be the mastermind of the racket and remains absconding. He said questioning of the arrested accused was continuing and more victims could come to light.

What we know about Bittu Bajrangi?

Bittu Bajrangi’s real name is Raj Kumar Panchal. A vegetable vendor-turned self-styled cow protector from Faridabad’s Parvatiya Colony, he heads the Gau Raksha Bajrang Force.

He came into the spotlight after helping a Faridabad man file the first case under Haryana’s anti-conversion law following his daughter’s marriage to a Muslim neighbour in December 2022.

He was also linked to the case involving Sanskriti Shukla, who converted to Islam and married Javed Khan after a seven-year relationship. The couple went into hiding following threats from vigilante groups, including Bajrangi’s organisation.

Bajrangi made national headlines after being arrested in connection with the July 31, 2023, Nuh communal violence. Police accused him of brandishing weapons and threatening a senior woman police officer during a Vishva Hindu Parishad procession. He was booked under multiple IPC and Arms Act provisions, later secured bail, and in September 2024 briefly entered electoral politics by filing as an Independent candidate from the Faridabad NIT Assembly constituency before withdrawing and backing BJP candidate Satish Kumar Phagna, who went on to win the election by more than 33,000 votes.
