Brisbane 2032 Handed Boost As State, Federal Governments Agree To Joint Funding

The 2032 Brisbane Olympics was handed a boost as the state government of Queensland announced that they had secured a crucial deal with the federal government for the construction of a new stadium in Brisbane, in addition to other minor venues.

The government is said to invest a surplus of 3.4 billion Australian dollars towards infrastructure, a record for the nation, in the lead up to the quadrennial event.

Federal Infrastructure Minister Catherine King said that the move was, “about ensuring that when we hand the keys back after the closing ceremony, Queensland has the infrastructure it needs to build on this incredible legacy for decades to come."

The pièce de résistance of Brisbane 2032 is the 63,000-seat stadium at inner-city Victoria Park.

Brisbane 2032 chief Andrew Liveris stated, “Today marks a significant shift in forward momentum following the Queensland government’s announcement in March of its 2032 Delivery Plan."

The International Olympic Committee has endorsed the Queensland government’s 2032 venue plan after several false starts, stating that the Brisbane Games are “on the right path."

In May, newly elected International Olympic Committee chief Kirsty Coventry was in Brisbane for a three-day inspection visit before assuming her role as IOC president.

Kirsty Coventry officially took over as the President of the International Olympic Committee on the 23rd of June as she received the golden key to the Olympic House from outgoing chief Thomas Bach in Lausanne, Switzerland. The Zimbabwean former Olympic swimming champion, who was elected the first female chief in IOC history, was welcomed in a handover ceremony.

Coventry was elected as the 10th president of the IOC and the first female president in its history, following voting at the 144th IOC Session in Costa Navarino, Greece, in March this year.
