Brock Lesnar, arguably the most divisive figure in professional wrestling and mixed martial arts of the past 20 years, has found himself in the thick of legal entanglements and public fracas.
Whether it was a damage-limiting legal battle in connection with his UFC career or fresh scrutiny of his time under WWE’s bright lights, Lesnar’s off-the-mat story has often threatened to eclipse what he achieved as an athlete.Between his 2007 retirement and recent headlines about him stemming from a civil lawsuit filed by former WWE employee Janel Grant, an industry-shaking complaint. While Lesnar is not accused of a crime and hasn’t been named as a defendant in the suit, allegations cited in filings have powerfully shaped public perception and corporate decision-making, and affected Lesnar’s status onscreen.
Brock Lesnar’s legal disputes and past controversies
Lesnar’s past controversies date back to his mixed martial arts career. He failed a drug test for a banned substance shortly after UFC 200 in 2016, resulting in him being suspended by the United States Anti-Doping Agency and the Nevada State Athletic Commission. His victory over Mark Hunt was later overturned to a no-contest. Hunt later filed a lawsuit against Lesnar, the UFC and UFC President Dana White, claiming unfair competition and fraud related to the doping issue.
The suit was dropped in 2019, ending a protracted legal battle.
Years later, the name Lesnar came up in a much more serious context. Janel Grant also filed a civil suit in January 2024 against McMahon, WWE and the former executive John Laurinaitis, alleging sexual assault and trafficking as well as abuse of power. Court filings described a “world-famous athlete,” later revealed in amended documents to be Lesnar. McMahon allegedly tried to get Grant involved in contract talks with Lesnar, the complaint said.
It is important to note that Lesnar hasn't been accused of assault or criminal misconduct in the suit, nor is he named a defendant.
Public backlash and WWE’s response to Lesnar’s association with the lawsuit
The fallout from the suit brought swift professional repercussions. WWE removed Lesnar from creative plans, marketing materials and video game content as the case moved forward, according to news reports. His exit has sparked speculation about the company’s internal review processes and its handling of reputational risk management. So when Lesnar returned to WWE programming later, the reactions were decidedly mixed. Live audiences largely responded warmly, which was in keeping with his long-standing popularity as a marquee draw. But his reinstatement sent the message that the seriousness of the allegations in the broader lawsuit was not being taken seriously, critics said. Advocacy organizations and legal commentators wondered if WWE had gone far enough to address cultural issues in the company.
