In a bid to make Bengaluru plastic-free, Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Limited (BSWML) has planned to raid plastic manufacturers and wholesale traders five days a week, said Karee Gowda, Chief Executive Officer, BSWML.
Speaking at a press conference on September 12, Mr. Gowda said 27 teams have been formed under the leadership of assistant general managers to conduct regular checks. Additionally, at the ward level, marshals and junior health inspectors have been directed to carry out daily inspections and levy a minimum fine of ₹2,000.
“We have started such checks from September 3, which will continue to ensure reduction in single-use plastic,” Mr. Gowda said.
Since the launch of the drive on September 3, BSWML has collected ₹19.66 lakh in fines from 281 wholesale traders and ₹18.41 lakh from 2,842 retail traders. The value of seized plastic is estimated at ₹49.14 lakh. In total BSWML has seized 24.57 tonnes of single-use plastic and imposed fines totalling ₹38.07 lakh since September 3.
Mr. Gowda urged citizens to avoid plastic bags, and instead carry cloth or paper alternatives. Traders too have been told to switch to eco-friendly packaging to protect public health and curb pollution.
He further added that BSWML has strengthened grievance redressal mechanisms. Residents can now file complaints 24/7 through a digital platform, the Namma Bengaluru app, the toll-free helpline (1533), or the WhatsApp number (9448197197). In August alone, 1,483 complaints related to waste and blackspots were received, with 99% resolved. In September, 423 of the 515 complaints have been addressed.
To improve waste collection, auto-tipper vehicle schedules were revised on August 25. Attendance is now recorded between 5.30 a.m. and 6.30 a.m., one hour earlier than before, resulting in improved attendance from 84% in August to 95% this month, according to Mr. Gowda.
