A fourth-year BTech student allegedly died by suicide at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur campus on Friday. The boy was found hanging in his hostel room, marking the fourth case of unnatural death since January at the IIT campus.

Identified as Rital Mondal, the 21-year-old was a mechanical engineering student. He was found hanging in his room at Rajendra Prasad (RP) Hall hostel building on the campus, reported PTI, citing an institute official.

According to his hostelmates, the student had returned to his room after having dinner on Thursday night. They also mentioned that they did not find any abnormal behaviour.

An IIT Kharagpur official stated that after repeated knocks on the door went unanswered, campus police—along with institute security personnel—forced it open around noon. As they opened the room, they discovered the student hanging.

The parents of the student, who was a resident of Kolkata, have been informed.

Notably, this is the fourth such case at the campus since January this year.

Earlier on January 12, third-year electrical engineering student Shaon Malik was found hanging in his hostel room.

On April 20, Aniket Walker, a final-year Ocean Engineering student, was found dead under similar circumstances.

On May 4, Mohammad Asif Qamar, a third-year BTech student, was discovered dead in his hostel room.
