The bypolls to Davangere South and Bagalkot Assembly constituencies necessitated by the demise of former Ministers Shamanur Shivashankarappa and H.Y. Meti, respectively, will be held on April 9, 2026, the Election Commission of India announced on Sunday (March 15, 2026). Both the seats had been held by the ruling Congress.

The counting of votes would be held on May 4. While the last date for filing of nominations is March 23, the last date for withdrawal of nomination is March 26.

Both ruling Congress and Opposition BJP are facing tough competition among their prospective candidates, and both parties are left with little over a week to decide on their nominees. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah told reporters in Bagalkot on Saturday (March 14, 2026) that the party was ready to face the bye polls, and exuded confidence of winning.
