The AIADMK's IT wing alleged that the government appeared to be acting as a 'proxy' for the Congress government in Karnataka.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay and film producer K Venkata Narayana
Tamil Nadu’s decision to appoint businessman and film producer K Venkata Narayana as its Special Representative in New Delhi has sparked a political row, with Opposition parties questioning both his background and his close association with Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay.
The state government on Friday named Narayana, chairman of the Bengaluru-based KVN Group and producer of Vijay’s upcoming film Jana Nayagan, to the Cabinet-rank position. The post has been created for one year, according to a government order issued by Chief Secretary M Sai Kumar. The detailed terms of his appointment will be announced separately.
Key Link Between Chennai And New Delhi
The Special Representative serves as Tamil Nadu’s principal political liaison with the Union government. The office is responsible for coordinating meetings between the Chief Minister and Union ministers, monitoring central projects and funding, following up on policy matters, and assisting with parliamentary coordination.
Although administrative responsibilities in New Delhi are generally handled by Resident Commissioners, who are senior IAS officers, Tamil Nadu has traditionally appointed experienced politicians to this politically significant position.
Businessman Behind Vijay’s Final Film
Unlike previous appointees, Narayana comes from the corporate world rather than politics. He heads the KVN Group, a diversified business with interests in real estate and entertainment. Before launching KVN Productions in 2020, he served as Chief Executive Officer of the Prestige Group.
His production company is backing Jana Nayagan, the film expected to mark Vijay’s final appearance as an actor before fully dedicating himself to politics.
Opposition Attacks Government’s Decision
The appointment has drawn criticism from several Opposition parties. DMK Rajya Sabha MP P Wilson argued that assigning the role to a film producer diminishes the significance of an office responsible for protecting Tamil Nadu’s interests before the Union government, according to a report by the Indian Express.
He said the Special Representative is expected to coordinate with central ministries, assist MPs during Parliament sessions and strengthen communication between the Centre and the state.
BJP’s Tamil Nadu president Nainar Nagendran also questioned the choice, asking how someone with close links to Karnataka could effectively represent Tamil Nadu in New Delhi. He described the appointment as “a great betrayal" of the state’s people, reported the outlet.
The AIADMK’s IT wing alleged that the government appeared to be acting as a “proxy" for the Congress government in Karnataka. AMMK general secretary T T V Dhinakaran, meanwhile, accused the ruling dispensation of rewarding personal loyalty over administrative merit.
TVK Calls It A Gesture Of Gratitude
Leaders in the ruling TVK dismissed the criticism, saying Narayana’s appointment was a recognition of his support for Vijay during the challenging period surrounding the production of Jana Nayagan.
A senior TVK leader described the move as “nothing but gratitude", adding that the position is not regarded within the party as one carrying political rewards.
The leader also said Narayana’s experience in handling major corporate and infrastructure projects was one of the reasons behind his selection. Though originally from a Telugu family, he has spent much of his professional life in Karnataka, where he built the KVN Group before entering film production.
Part Of A Wider Pattern
Narayana is the third person with close personal ties to Vijay to receive an important government appointment since the new administration took office.
Earlier, Vijay’s longtime manager Jagadish Palaniswamy was appointed Private Secretary (Political). Astrologer Rickey Radhan Pandit Vettrivel was also named Officer on Special Duty (Political), although that appointment was later withdrawn following public criticism.
The latest appointment has added to the debate over whether the government is prioritising trusted associates or administrative experience in key positions.
