The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) will finalise in two weeks empanelment of Chartered Accountancy (CA) firms for audit of autonomous, local and other bodies from July 2025 to March 2027, senior officials of the constitutional body said Thursday.

On May 27, the CAG had invited an expression of willingness from CA firms to audit financial statements of autonomous bodies. The deadline for CA firms to submit their expression of willingness was June 5 and the officials said the  empanelled firms will be finalised soon.

The CAG had invited CA firms to be part of the auditors team in view of the institution’s limited technical resources, especially with regards to the vast audit landscape in this area.

Thirty cities have been identified for the audits initially, the CAG officials said.

“… These firms will be registered, empanelled and due confidentiality will be maintained,” said Deputy CAG (commercial) Anand Mohan Bajaj.

Festive offer

Meanwhile, A Venkatesan, CPI(M) MP from Madurai, objected to empanelling CA firms saying that it will dilute the CAG’s independence and is against its constitutional mandate. In response, Deputy CAG Bajaj said, “The audit will be conducted by us, so it is not being outsourced. We will explain the issue to the honourable MP.”

The CAG said that CA firms would work as part of a team led by an officer in charge of Indian Audit and Accounts Department, and the CAG would still be responsible for the work and its output.
