As the United States prepares for possible fresh strikes on Iran, US President Donald Trump on Friday said he does not mind being called a “tyrant" or “dictator" by critics, but strongly objected to being labelled “dumb".
Speaking at a rally in New York City focused on affordability issues, Trump used the occasion to defend his mental fitness and cognitive abilities.
During the event, Trump moved away from his prepared speech and spoke about criticism surrounding his intelligence and cognitive health.
“They hit me with a bad one: He’s a dumb person," Trump told supporters.
He then joked about the spelling of the word and said he would rather be described as a “brilliant tyrant dictator" than unintelligent.
The 79-year-old US president said the criticism led him to ask his doctor whether there was a test available to assess cognitive abilities.
Trump recounts cognitive test
According to Trump, his doctor suggested a cognitive assessment. The president described the test as beginning with simple object-identification questions before moving on to more complicated mathematical exercises.
Trump narrated examples of questions he claimed were included in the test, such as identifying animals and solving arithmetic problems involving multiplication, division and subtraction.
He said he answered all the questions correctly and used the story to argue that he remained mentally sharp.
The comments again drew attention to Trump’s repeated public references to cognitive testing, especially the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, commonly known as MoCA.
The MoCA is widely used as a screening tool to detect possible cognitive impairment or dementia. Trump has repeatedly claimed in public appearances that he passed such examinations.
Medical experts raise questions
Some medical experts have questioned why several cognitive assessments would be needed within a relatively short period of time.
Reports quoting psychiatrists and neurologists suggested that repeated testing could raise questions about possible underlying concerns. However, no official diagnosis or medical evidence regarding cognitive problems has been made public.
Trump is reportedly expected to undergo another medical evaluation at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in the coming days as part of a scheduled health check-up.
Debate over age and fitness
Trump’s remarks come amid continuing political debate in the United States over the age and mental fitness of senior leaders.
The president has frequently criticised former president Joe Biden over age-related concerns.
At the same time, Trump himself has faced increasing scrutiny over his speeches, social media posts and public appearances.
The White House has repeatedly defended Trump’s health and mental sharpness.
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth recently described Trump as “sharp" and “insightful", while administration officials have dismissed allegations of cognitive decline.
