Cam Heyward admits he was shocked by the Minkah Fitzpatrick trade
Cam Heyward, one of the team’s longest-tenured leaders, didn’t hold back when talking about the blockbuster trade during an interview on The Rich Eisen Show on Wednesday, July 17, 2025. The Steelers had just completed a deal that brought seven-time Pro Bowl cornerback Jalen Ramsey and tight end Jonnu Smith to Pittsburgh. But in return, the team parted ways with All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, along with a few late draft picks.
Heyward explained that at first, he was excited about the idea of adding Ramsey. “The way it came out, I thought we were just bringing Jalen in for a pick,” Heyward said. “And then I found out it’s a trade with Minkah, and I’m like, ‘Damn.’” The move was bittersweet for Heyward, who called Fitzpatrick a key part of the group. Still, he acknowledged Ramsey’s talent and said, “There’s no shortage of talent there.”Jalen Ramsey brings versatility to the defense, he can play corner, slot, or safety and Heyward is looking forward to seeing him and new receiver DK Metcalf on the same sideline.
The Steelers are clearly loading up for 2025, with one season of Aaron Rodgers expected at quarterback.

“You’ve got to welcome what all a player brings, that’s what makes a good team.”The Steelers also face another major decision. T.J. Watt hasn’t yet signed a contract extension, and trade rumors are growing. But Heyward won’t let that happen without a fight. “I’m going up to Omar and telling him, ‘That’s not happening.’” As the Steelers prepare for 2025, Heyward hopes Watt stays, Ramsey shines, and the team finally breaks its playoff win drought.
