The stage is set, carpets are rolled out, and preparations are in full swing as the much-anticipated ceasefire talks between the United States and Iran are scheduled to be held in Islamabad, Pakistan, today.
Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf, Speaker of Iran’s Parliament, has emerged as the leading figure of the delegation. Tasked with the risky mandate to negotiate peace with Washington, Ghalibaf is widely viewed as a “pragmatic hardliner".
For any Iranian leader, engaging in peace talks with a nation denounced for decades as the ‘Great Satan’ and the one that has caused massive damage to the country’s civilian and military infrastructure in the recent conflict is no walk in the park.
Iran-US Ceasefire Talks In Islamabad LIVE
U.S. Vice President JD Vance, leading the American delegation, has left for Islamabad. According to a CNN report, citing sources, the talks in Islamabad will be both indirect and direct, with the two sides expected to agree on the agenda through Pakistani mediators before moving to face-to-face discussions later in the day.
But if the talks take place, that itself will be a significant step, signaling both nations mean serious business. The fact that U.S. President Donald Trump has sent Vance — at Tehran’s request — to Islamabad reflects the seriousness in Washington.
Tehran’s willingness to engage in negotiations with Washington after absorbing a heavy damage points to a subtle reality — that it chases peace to end the prolonged conflict in the region and put a demise to its long-existing economic isolation.
Is Ghalibaf ‘Man Of The Moment’?
Sustained military pressure and the assassination of key political & military figures leaders have weakened the leadership of Iran. At the same time, it has expanded the dominance of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
The challenge before Ghalibaf is — to convert battlefield resilience into strategic gains.
A Look At Ghalibaf’s Career
Ghalibaf’s career reflects a stark paradox. Rising from a security background — shaped by Iran’s power structure, discipline and hardline institutions — he offers views like a technocrat.
Born near Mashhad in 1961, Ghalibaf joined the IRGC as a young man and went on to rise through the ranks during the Iran-Iraq War, which played a crucial role in shaping his later political and military career.
Serving for a long 12 years as mayor of Tehran (2005-17), Ghalibaf focused on the expansion of metro, improvement in urban infrastructure, and the construction of expressways and tunnels — this solidified his image as an effective administrator.
Yet his record is not without blemish — his role in the suppression of the 1999 student protests and allegations of corruption undermine his image of a technocratic moderniser.
For the Trump administration, Ghalibaf appeared to be a credible negotiating partner in Tehran, thanks to his carefully cultivated image of a contemporary, Islamist version of a modernising strongman.
But it might be noted that in Iran, being seen as US’ preferred negotiator is not something you can flaunt.
The Balancing Act
Engaging with the U.S. is never easy — whether for its allies or rivals. In this case, making a peace deal with Washington in the aftermath of a deadly conflict is even more complicated.
Ghalibaf has to strike a delicate balance — carrying a hard negotiating posture to cater to the domestic audiences yet willing to agree to a practical deal to advance Tehran’s long-term interests.
The U.S.-Iran peace talks are scheduled to be held in Islamabad, today, April 11.
