Capgemini Daycare Case: Prime Accused Manjula Secures Anticipatory Bail

Manjula, the supervisor at the Little Scholars daycare centre on the Capgemini campus and the prime accused (Accused No. 1) in the alleged daycare abuse case, has secured anticipatory bail from a Bengaluru court.

She had been absconding ever since the FIR was registered after the issue came to light on June 29. A Bengaluru court granted her anticipatory bail on July 8.

A senior police officer confirmed to CNN-News18 that Manjula had obtained anticipatory bail.

“We will issue her a notice to appear before the investigating officer and record her statement. She has been granted anticipatory bail by the court. We will question her as part of the investigation," the officer said.

Police said Manjula’s statement is crucial as she was the caregiver as well as the supervisor in charge of the daycare centre functioning on the Capgemini campus. Investigators are expected to confront her with CCTV footage, statements of other employees, and testimonies of parents as part of the probe.

Manjula has been accused of allegedly abusing toddlers and her ways of disciplining children included locking them in bathrooms to quieten them at the daycare centre. According to statements recorded by the police and allegations made in the complaint, she allegedly beat children with a mop handle, slapped them, pinched them, force-fed them, and locked them inside the bathroom as punishment. Police are also examining allegations that children were intimidated and subjected to repeated physical and emotional abuse while under the care of the staff.

The allegations first surfaced after a consultant working at Capgemini raised concerns over the treatment of children at the daycare. The matter gathered momentum after videos purportedly showing the abuse surfaced, prompting police to register a case and launch an investigation. The daycare was being operated by Little Scholars, a third-party service provider on the Capgemini campus.

The FIR naming five accused, including Manjula as Accused No. 1, was registered based on a complaint received through the Child Helpline (1098). Since the registration of the FIR, police have arrested multiple accused in the case, while Manjula had remained untraceable until she approached the court seeking anticipatory bail.

Police said they will now serve her notice and summon her before the investigating officer to record her statement. Investigators are expected to verify her version against the evidence collected so far, including CCTV footage, electronic evidence and witness statements.

Manjula had been booked under Section 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, relating to assault or use of criminal force, and Section 75 of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, which deals with cruelty to children by a person having actual charge or control over them. Both offences carry a maximum punishment of up to three years’ imprisonment.

The investigation is continuing, with police expected to question Manjula and examine additional evidence collected from the daycare centre as they seek to establish the extent of the alleged abuse. The police have questioned the four other accused named in the FIR— Vijalaxmi, Sindhu, Bindu and Bhavani. Vijalaxmi was also arrested after evidence and leaked videos that surfaced on social media allegedly showed her ignoring a young child in distress.

A sixth accused, Sujata was later added after the police found that the alleged whistleblower had recorded and circulated the videos not to expose the alleged abuse at the daycare centre, but allegedly to settle personal scores with Manjula following a dispute between the two. Police claimed the videos were circulated with the intention of implicating Manjula rather than highlighting the alleged mistreatment of children at the daycare centre.
