Car explodes outside Dunmurry police station near Belfast, homes evacuated, no injuries, suspected car bomb raises fears of dissident republican activity, police probe ongoing

A major security alert was declared in Northern Ireland after a car exploded outside a police station in Dunmurry, near Belfast, in the early hours of Sunday.

Police said nearby homes were evacuated and the area was sealed off as a precaution, with bomb disposal teams deployed to examine the scene.

There were no reports of injuries. Authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of the blast, though it is being treated as a suspected car bomb.

“It is distressing and disturbing to wake up to the news that a car bomb exploded outside Dunmurry police station last night," said Sorcha Eastwood, a member of the UK Parliament who represents the Langan Valley, southwest of Belfast, reported The Washington Post.

“A busy area, a car bomb left outside residential housing, small businesses and any number of people out and about on a Saturday night working or socialising,’’ she said. “It is only through the grace of God that there are no casualties."

Local representatives described the incident as “distressing", noting it happened in a busy residential area.

The attack has raised concerns about renewed activity by dissident republican groups, which have carried out sporadic attacks despite the 1998 Good Friday Agreement that largely ended decades of violence in the region.

Police have urged the public to avoid the area as investigations continue.
