A car driver allegedly attempted to run over a police head constable during a vehicle inspection on the Hosur main road near the Zuzuvadi checkpost in Tamil Nadu.

According to the police, the accused has been identified as Yarab Pasha (34).

The incident occurred when police signalled a suspicious car to stop. Head Constable Rajiv Gandhi asked the driver to halt the vehicle for checking.

Instead of stopping, the driver suddenly accelerated towards the officer. In an attempt to save himself, the head constable grabbed onto the car’s bonnet while the driver continued to drive with him hanging on.

Despite other motorists shouting and asking the driver to stop, the vehicle continued moving for some distance. The officer narrowly escaped serious injury.

Hudco police inspector Syed Mubarak said Pasha did not stop the car when police indicated to him to stop it. The car hit constable Rajiv Gandhi. “The head constable clung onto the bonnet of the car. Pasha drove the car on the Bengaluru-Chennai National Highway for four km with the head police on the bonnet," the inspector said, TOI reported.

The entire incident was captured on the dashcam of another vehicle.

With the help of local residents, the car was eventually intercepted and inspected. During the search, police recovered 290 kilograms of tobacco (Gutka) and liquor worth around Rs 3 lakh, which were allegedly being smuggled from Karnataka into Tamil Nadu.

The accused driver was arrested by SIPCOT police, who are continuing the investigation.
