In Saharanpur, a family narrowly escaped tragedy late Tuesday night after their car plunged into an 11-foot-deep pit allegedly left open due to municipal contractor negligence.

Virendra, a resident of Jukhedi village, was driving his ailing mother to Gangoh for treatment. His wife, children, and brother were also in the car. Around 1 am, the road suddenly sank into a deep pit dug in the middle of the road.

However, all passengers managed to get out safely and escape with their lives. Locals said the pit had been dug by a municipal contractor for boring work.

Villagers have pointed out that “neither a warning board was placed nor barricading was arranged.” With the help of nearby residents, the family was pulled out, and the sick mother was taken to the hospital. On Wednesday morning, a bulldozer crane was used to lift the car out.

Since the incident, anger has been brewing among locals. Villagers alleged that if proper safety arrangements had been made on time, the accident would never have occurred. They also claimed that “such gross negligence by the contractor could lead to a major accident at any time.”

They further pointed out that had another vehicle passed on the same road at night, a “fatal mishap was certain.” Villagers have demanded strict action against the contractor.
