Spanish tennis star Carlos Alcaraz has said that after many successive weeks of competition without rest, he has withdrawn from the upcoming National Bank Open, as he has slight muscle problems and would like to recover for the upcoming US Open.
Alcaraz lost to top-ranked Jannik Sinner in the Wimbledon final earlier this month in a bid for his third successive crown in the grass-court classic.
Notably, Sinner has also withdrawn from the National Bank Open, with only Alexander Zverev now left among the big-ticket players.
“After many consecutive weeks of competition without rest, I will not be able to play in Toronto this year. I have small muscle issues, and I need to recover physically and mentally for what comes next," Alcaraz tweeted on Tuesday.

Alcaraz had his best Canada run two years back, falling to American Tommy Paul in the quarters.
“It’s disappointing to lose a player of Carlos’ quality, as we know our fans were looking forward to watching him," tournament director Karl Hale said.
“Although he has been on the scene for a while, he’s still at the beginning of his career and there will be plenty of opportunities for Canadians to see him again in the future," Hale added.
American Sebastian Korda, the world number 33, struggling with a leg injury and Poland’s 38th-ranked Hubert Hurkacz, fighting a knee injury, have withdrawn as well.
Sinner lifted the trophy the last time the Canadian ATP Masters 1000 was held in Toronto two years back, while Novak Djokovic is a four-time champion, but he won’t feature either.
Taylor Fritz, Lorenzo Mussetti and Holger Rune are still in the mix.
