Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool etched their names into British tennis history on Saturday, becoming the first all-British duo in 89 years to win the men’s doubles title at Wimbledon.
They defeated Australia’s Rinky Hijikata and the Netherlands’ David Pel 6-2, 7-6 (3) in a commanding performance on Centre Court.
With the victory, Cash and Glasspool are the first all-British pair to lift the Wimbledon men’s doubles trophy since Pat Hughes and Raymond Tuckey did so in 1936.
“When you say it, it sounds incredible," said Glasspool in the post-match on-court interview, reflecting on the historical significance of the win.
The win capped off a flawless grass-court season for the fifth-seeded British pair, who also claimed titles at Queen’s Club and Eastbourne in the lead-up to Wimbledon.
Their recent successes had elevated expectations, and the duo lived up to the hype by going all the way at the All England Club.
“There was a lot of pressure on our shoulders," said Cash. “The fact that we’ve been able to do what everyone has been talking about is surreal."
A First Grand Slam Triumph
The Wimbledon final marked the first Grand Slam final appearance for both Cash and Glasspool, who delivered a composed and focused performance to seal the win.
On the other side of the net, Hijikata was aiming for a second Grand Slam men’s doubles title, having won the 2023 Australian Open alongside Jason Kubler.
An Unlikely Finalist Pairing
In contrast to the British duo’s established partnership, Pel and Hijikata were a last-minute pairing with no previous experience together before the tournament began.
“It was our first time actually speaking on the day the tournament started," Pel admitted, highlighting the unlikely nature of their run to the final.
Despite their limited familiarity, the pair pushed the match into a tight second-set tiebreak, but ultimately couldn’t match the cohesion and confidence of the British champions.
