Catchments of dams in Pune increase water stock by 1 TMC in 24 hours

Just four days of rain and Pune’s infrastructure shows early signs of distress as potholes emerge on major arterial roads.

Pune: Showers in the catchments of Khadakwasla (16mm), Temghar (46mm), Panshet (45mm), and Varasgaon (44mm) dams have led to a sizeable increase in their water stock on SundayThese dams that provide water to Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) areas saw a boost of 1 TMC in the 24 hours between 5pm on Saturday and 5pm on Sunday. The city now has a little more than a month’s supplyTemghar has 0.22 TMC, Varasgaon holds 2.55 TMC, Panshet has 2.65 TMC, and Khadakwasla has 0.31 TMC. Their collective storage is 5.72 TMC, nearly 19.6% of the total capacity. Last year, the four dams held 17.15 TMC of water, around 59% of the total storage. Pavana (74mm) has 2.29 TMC and Andra (70mm) had 1 TMC. Both supply water to Pimpri ChinchwadOn Sunday, Bhama Askhed, which provides water to the eastern parts of Pune, recorded 39mm rainfall and now holds 2.65 TMC.A senior irrigation department official said, “Water levels in the dams have not gone up significantly yet though heavy showers continued until late in the night in the catchment areas. There was no release of water from any dam. We will start the discharge from Khadakwasla dam when it is around 1.97 TMC.”
